With the increase in shootings, firearm seizures, and the current wait time for laboratory results from the Department of Forensic Science (DFS) Firearms Sections, sworn personnel who seize cartridge casings and firearms during the course of their investigation are expected, when applicable, to utilize the departments’ NIBIN testing. The department will offer the same NIBIN services to any law enforcement agency requesting these services.
- In most cases, the examiner will be able to receive the evidence, test fire the firearm if applicable, and return the firearm to the submitting law enforcement personnel.
- Evidentiary firearm casings could possibly require a longer processing period.

Evidence Submission Form (SP-342)
The SP-342 is required with the submission of firearms and/or cartridge cases.
