Virginia State Police provides a myriad of services for local law enforcement including reporting services, fingerprinting, and background checks.
Alert Programs
Virginia alert programs provide valuable tools for Virginia law enforcement agencies in the ongoing battle to protect children and missing adults. Programs include: AMBER Alert program, Blue Alert System, Missing Adult Alert Program – Ashanti Alert, Missing Person with Autism Alert Plan, and Senior Alerts program.
Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS)
CJIS oversees State operations involving: National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and also operates the Central Criminal Records Exchange, Sex Offender Registry, Missing Children Information Clearinghouse, Automated Fingerprint Identification System, and the Firearms Transaction Center.
Conservator of the Peace
The special conservator of the peace is a “law-enforcement officer” for the purposes of Article 4 (§ 37.2-808 et seq.) of Chapter 8 of Title 37.2.
D.A.R.E.
D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.
Drug Diversion Training
Virginia State Police’s pharmaceutical drug diversion program works with the DEA, the Department of Health Professions, and the Department of Medical Assistance Services, along with local law enforcement agencies, to combat the diversion of prescription drugs for illicit purposes.
Gaming Enforcement Unit
The Gaming Enforcement Unit (GEU) is tasked with synchronizing the enforcement of gaming laws by state and local law enforcement, and serves as a liaison between such agencies and federal law enforcement. GEU also assists other state agencies tasked with gaming oversight and helps to promote and enable the equitable enforcement of gaming laws within the Commonwealth.
General Investigation Section (GIS)
In addition to the investigations initiated by the Virginia State Police, a priority of the General Investigation Section (GIS), as a part of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, is to provide specialized assistance to local law enforcement agencies. Special agents regularly assist local agencies as needed for major crime investigations and incidents related to arson/bomb and explosive matters, hostage barricade situations, financial crime matters, public corruption complaints, and violent crime investigations to include homicides and officer-involved shootings.
Hampton Roads Human Trafficking Task Force
Human Trafficking cannot be stopped by the efforts of one person alone. The Hampton Roads Human Trafficking Task Force (HRHTTF) provides services to human trafficking victims, investigates and prosecutes crimes related to sex and labor trafficking, and conducts public outreach activities to promote human trafficking awareness throughout the community.
Impaired Driver Training Unit (IDTU)
The IDTU’s mission is to Educate, Encourage, and Enforce. Educate law enforcement from basic to expert level training, encourage those officers to continue their education and maintain their proficiency, and encourage them to enforce impaired driving laws.
Livescan
Livescan provides for the electronic capture and transmission of arrest and applicant data and fingerprints to the Central Criminal Records Exchange (CCRE) at Virginia State Police.
Military Excess Property Program (The 1033 Program)
The 1033 Program permits the Secretary of Defense to transfer, without charge, excess U. S. Department of Defense (DoD) personal property (supplies and equipment) to State and local law enforcement agencies (LEAs). This program has allowed law enforcement agencies to acquire non-tactical vehicles, computer equipment, tools, fingerprint equipment, night vision equipment, radios, tents and sleeping bags, photographic equipment, various clothing items, and more.
Special Operations Division
The primary mission of the Special Operations Division is to preserve life and property through the use of tactical response, along with search and recovery measures. The Special Operations Division is committed to providing creative, deliberate, and reactive solutions for Department personnel and partner law enforcement agencies through state-of-the-art equipment, extensive training, and thorough planning.
STARS
The Statewide Agencies Radio System (STARS) provides multi-channel trunked digital voice and data wireless communications that are specifically designed for public safety and service requirements.
State and Local Law Enforcement Equipment Procurement Program (The 1122 Program)
The State and Local Law Enforcement Equipment Procurement Program affords state and local agencies the opportunity to take advantage of discounts available to the federal government due to its large volume purchases.
Virginia State Police Training Academy
The Virginia State Police Training Division is recognized nationwide for its exemplary training standards, instructional curriculum, and cadre of skilled, expert, certified instructors.
Virginia Cold Case Database
The Virginia Cold Case Database was developed to assist Virginia State Police investigators and local law enforcement in soliciting tips on unsolved cases throughout the Commonwealth. The site displays unsolved homicides, missing persons cases, and unidentified remains. We are excited to partner with our citizens to give justice to victims and closure to families.
Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN)
The Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) functions as a service facility under the management control of the Virginia Department of State Police, providing operational support to the entire criminal justice community. The primary mission of VCIN is to provide a means of rapid communications for criminal justice agencies throughout Virginia.
